Your eyesight
When you take your test, you will be asked to read a number plate of a vehicle chosen by the examiner. You must satisfy the examiner that in good daylight you can read the old style number plate at a minimum distance of 20.5m (approx 67 feet). Plates of a newer style – (introduced on 1st September 2001) those styled as ‘AB51 ABC’ must be read at a distance of 20m (66 feet). If you cannot read the plates naturally or with the aid of spectacles or contact lenses, the test will not be conducted and you will lose your fee.
'Show me, tell me'
Prior to starting your drive, you will be asked two questions which determine your knowledge on everyday safety checks under the bonnet, lights, tyres, brakes and steering. If you answer one or both of these incorrectly, you will receive one minor fault. We will provide a comprehensive list of these questions and answers. The test will last for approximately 35/40 minutes and will cover a variety of driving conditions.
Manoeuvres The test will include two out of three reversing manoeuvres. These are: • Turn in the road • Reversing around a corner • Parallel or reverse park • Bay park (where test centres have parking bays)
